Hi!I am Shiori Tsurumoto from Misekai.
I have been writing my story of my life with my partner James and many of you asked me for English version
so here I am finally writing the story in English today.
Who am I?
-
I’m Shiori. I’m from Japan born and grew up in Tokyo.
-
In 2016, after I finished my high school I went to Australia (Gold Coast) to study Business and Tourism management.
-
In 2019, I graduated as I planned and my first full time job was a Barista position at cafe in Cairns.
-
In 2020, I took holiday and went back to Japan then Covid happened so I gave up going back to Australia and started looking for a job in Japan.
-
December 2020 I found an ad looking for a manager at Japanese restaurant in Tanzania, so I applied for it and had an online interview, then I got the job!
-
March 2021, I started working in Zanzibar (Tanzania) and same year May I met James at work.
-
March 2022, I married with him and in April I moved to Maasai village to live with his family.
Ok, now I am going to write the details.
A life in Zanzibar
Zanzibar is an island located 2hours away from the main land of Tanzania and this place is famous for beautiful beaches and resorts so many tourists are coming to enjoy their vacations every year.
Maasai tribe, they are originally from the mainland but to make their living, many of them come to Zanzibar to get jobs like security, tour guide or selling souvenirs at the beach.
At my workplace, Maasai stays at night to make sure no one can break into the restaurant and steal something.
One day the security Maasai he got a problem at his village so he brought another Maasai and that Maasai was James.
He was very quiet and didn’t smile or talk so my first impression of him was
(scary, maybe he doesn’t like foreigners)
Another day I saw our staff talking with him and they were having fun so I decided to join but he couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak Swahili either.
I asked local staff to translate what he was saying and that was the time I realised he is not a scary person, he is actually funny.
When the local staff weren’t there we had to use google translate to communicate but it was actually useful and we could talked and got to know each other.
After one week, he told me that he has feelings for me. I kinda knew that he was going to say it one day but I didn’t take it seriously at first because I was little scared believing people in Zanzibar.
We kept talking after that and I saw his feeling were true and I felt like maybe I should give it try because I did also have feelings for him actually.
After one month since he came to the workplace, he had to move to another town as his work was only temporary.
He didn’t tell me about it until the day before so after he left the town I felt lost and I needed to see him so when I got my day off I went to to the town where he stayed with his sister and mother.
The first day I went to see him, he introduced me to his sister and his mother.
They knew that James doesn’t speak English at all so they must have surprised that time😂😂
September 2021, when I moved into new place he could come to the town so we decided to live together.
The reason I decided to marry him is that he was always serious about the relationship with me and he told me he was ready to marry me anytime.
For me ages and the time that we have been together don’t really matter, I mean I think there is no right or perfect answers for such things.
When I felt like ‘I am ready to be with him’
I told him that I want to marry him.
He said ‘sure then we will marry’
I am sure being together and actually getting marry are pretty same for him so he wasn’t surprised he was just excited when I told him.
31st of March 2022, we got married in Zanzibar. We signed the paper at the workplace we met.
16th of April 2022, I moved to Maasai village with James.
13th of May, we had a wedding in Maasai village.
This is our story from the day we met until we got married.
I am forever grateful for having him in my life.
